Chinese researchers have developed a new type quasi-solid-state sodium ion micro-battery with high performance, according to a recent study paper published in the journal Energy &Environmental Science.

The rapid development of microelectronics, including wireless sensors, implantable medical devices and wearable electronics has sparkled continuous evolution of high-performance and cost-effective micro-batteries.

The currently most popular lithium-ion micro-batteries are facing the problems of scarce resources and higher costs, while the sodium ion micro-batteries have similar electrochemical performances with relatively richer resources and lower costs.

The researchers demonstrated a prototype of quasi-solid-state planar sodium ion micro-battery (NIMB) with sodium titanate anode and sodium vanadate phosphate cathode, both of which are embedded into a three-dimensional interconnected graphene network. Meanwhile, a new type of ion-gel electrolyte with robust ionic conductivity was used on this micro-battery.

The NIMB exhibited high volumetric capacity at both room temperature and a high temperature of 100 degrees centigrade, said the paper.

Moreover, the quasi-solid-state NIMB also presented high flexibility, tunable voltage and capacity output.
