It was a joyful moment for a remote school in Trans-Nzoia County in northwest Kenya when Chinese ambassador to Kenya Wu Peng on Saturday presented an information and communication technology (ICT) lab.
The facility equipped with 45 computers is set to simplify teaching among learners at Benon Secondary school in Cherangany Constituency.
The first ritual for the guests was to plant trees in the school compound as a sign of supporting the environment.
Amid smiling faces from students and the parents, Wu cut the tape and officially opened the lab room.
Wu emphasized the importance of providing and accessing Internet technology in rural areas to help Kenyans especially youths to explore self-reliant job opportunities.
Accompanied by local lawmaker Joshua Kuttuny, the Chinese envoy pledged to support the establishment of the multi-purpose hall and donation of more computers to assist local community accessing ICT knowledge and connecting them to the rest of the World.
The ambassador said enhancing technology in remote areas will help create jobs, adding that his government is committed to supporting such programs.
"It is through hard work that you can achieve your dream. This equipment will simplify your learning," Wu told the students.
Lack of information technology in remote areas fueled poverty. The lawmaker Kuttuny said digitization of learning institutions will help connect such areas to developed countries.
