5-magnitude quake hits NW China, no casualties reported

A 5-magnitude earthquake jolted Zhangye city in northwest China's Gansu Province on Monday evening, with no casualties reported as of 10:45 p.m.

The earthquake occurred at 8:48 p.m. Monday, according to the China Earthquake Networks Center.

The epicenter, with a depth of 11 km, was monitored at 38.6 degrees north latitude and 100.35 degrees east longitude, the center said in a report.

The epicenter of the quake was located in Huazhai Township, Ganzhou District, Zhangye. The quake was felt in Ganzhou District, Linze County and Sunan County of Zhangye.

Bai Yong, head of Sunan County, told Xinhua that many people in the county seat ran out of their homes to avoid the tremors. Local authorities are checking the situation door-to-door, and no casualties have been reported so far. Property damage is currently being evaluated.

China Railway Lanzhou Bureau Group Co., Ltd. said no trains were affected by the quake. Further examination of the rail lines is underway.

The Ministry of Emergency Management urged local authorities to send rescue teams to the quake-hit area immediately.
