A senior official in Sichuan province is being investigated for alleged serious violations of discipline and law by the Communist Party of China Central Commission for Discipline Inspection (CCDI) and the National Supervisory Commission (NSC).

Peng Yuxing, vice-governor of Sichuan, had not been seen in public for nearly two weeks when he was confirmed to be under investigation by an online announcement of the CDDI and NSC issued on Sunday.

A native of Qianwei county in Sichuan, Peng, 57, became a vice-governor of the province in September 2017. Before holding the position, he had been Party chief of the cities of Neijiang and Mianyang respectively since 2013 to 2017.

Mianyang is home to many key research institutes and enterprises with national defense contracts, such as the Chinese Academy of Engineering Physics, which developed China's first nuclear bomb.

Despite being far from any coast or border, Mianyang has played a part in a variety of technological achievements, such as the first domestically developed large passenger plane, the C919.

Sichuan Jiuzhou Electric Group in the city made the C919 cabin's core system, including a public announcement system and cabin intercom, according to Li Yixun, one of its researchers.

Due to Mianyang's technological advantages, China's central government approved the city's plan to build the China Science and Technology City, which aims to convert Mianyang's research resources into commercial products.

Peng's resume in the website of the Sichuan provincial government highlights his academic background before becoming an official.

At the age of 16, Peng became a student in the department of chemistry at Sichuan University in 1978. Four years later, he studied for a master's degree in the department.

From 1990 to 1992, he studied as a polymer material major at University Pierre and Marie Curie in France and received a doctoral degree.

From 2001 to 2002, he served as a vice-president and later president of the Chengdu branch of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. From 2010 to 2013, he was head of the Sichuan provincial department of science and technology.
