China on Wednesday called for a political solution in Venezuela and urged Venezuela to guarantee China's legitimate rights and interests in the country.
In an article published on Bloomberg, Venezuela's opposition leader Juan Guaido said that he has established contacts with China, and Beijing understands his position.
When asked about China's comment on the Bloomberg story during a daily press briefing on Wednesday, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lu Kang told the Global Times that China's position on the Venezuelan issue is clear that Venezuela's internal affairs should be decided and solved by its own people.
"The parties in Venezuela should seek a political solution through peaceful dialogue within the framework of the Constitution as soon as possible.
"China is willing to continue to promote peace talks and hopes that the international community will also play a constructive role in this regard," Lu said, adding that the ties between China and Venezuela is a normal state-to-state relationship.
"The pragmatic cooperation of the two countries has always followed the principles of equality, mutual benefit, win-win cooperation, and commercialization."
Regardless of the changes in Venezuela, China's legitimate rights and interests should be protected conscientiously and effectively, Lu noted.
