5.1-magnitude hits India's Bay of Bengal

A moderate earthquake hit India's Bay of Bengal on Tuesday, officials said.

According to the Indian Meteorological Department, the 5.1-magnitude earthquake occurred at 7:02 a.m. local time.

"The epicentre of earthquake was located at 14.5 degrees north latitude and 85.7 degrees east longitude," information released by the meteorological department said. "The depth of the earthquake was 10 km."

The Bay of Bengal is the northeastern part of the Indian Ocean, bounded on the west and northwest by India on the north by Bangladesh, and on the east by Myanmar and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

So far there were no reports of any damage or loss of life in the earthquake.

A powerful 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck India's neighbouring country Nepal in 2015, causing large scale destruction and killing over 5,000 people and injuring another 8,000.
