The People's Liberation Army (PLA) Navy on Wednesday held a memorial ceremony for the First Sino-Japanese War of 1894-1895 on a ship anchored in a Weihai port in east China's Shandong Province.

Memorial events are being held in China to mark the 120th anniversary of the Sino-Japanese war of 1894-1895. The events are staged in Weihai, a coastal city in East China's Shandong province.

A Chinese navy spokeswoman said in a press conference ahead of the anniversary, that there'll be two days of events held on a Chinese Navy vessel, and there'll also be a seminar on the war. She said that another special memorial session will be held in waters near Weihai city, which was one of the major battlefields 120 years ago.

The commemorations come amid China's efforts to strengthen its naval forces in the face of an increasing spate of marine disputes with its neighboring countries.
