China currently has 1,453 combat planes, placing it second after the US, which has 2,740 military planes, according to a report from aviation magazine Flight International in January.

However, even though China's total number of combat planes is at about half the number of the US, its overall combat effectiveness capacity is only at 14 percent of the US' capability.

Russia comes in third place, with 1,438 combat planes.
