China urges prudence amid US missile boost plan

2013-03-19 10:26 CNTV     Web Editor: Mo Hong'e comment

The Chinese Foreign Ministry has said US plans to bolster its missile defenses in response to provocations by the Democratic People's Republic of Korea would only escalate regional tensions. The Ministry instead urged the US to act prudently.

In his daily news briefing on Monday, Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei said the best way to increase security and resolve the problem of nuclear proliferation is through diplomacy.

Hong Lei said, "The anti-missile issue has a direct bearing on global and regional balance and stability. It also concerns the mutual strategic interests between the countries. China has always believed that countries should, in accordance with mutual benefit, realize universal security and resolve the issue of nuclear proliferation through diplomatic means. Actions such as strengthening anti-missile defenses will intensify antagonism and will not be beneficial to finding a solution to the problem. China hopes the relevant countries will proceed toward peace and stability, adopt a responsible attitude and act prudently on the relevant issue."
