Ten years' achievements in national defense science

2012-11-05 09:21 China Military Online     Web Editor: Liu Xian comment

The Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) has made brilliant achievements in space technology, innovation and localization of weaponry and equipment, and military-civilian strategic cooperation in the past ten years.

Space and cyber technologies get increasingly improved

Shuttle flights between space and earth, extravehicular activities, rendezvous and docking, etc. have been carried out since the Shenzhou V spacecraft initiated China's first manned space flight in 2003. A number of state-owned projects including "Shenzhou", "Chang'e" and "Tiangong" have listed China among the world's space powers.

China launched its 16th BeiDou navigation satellite at 23:33 of October 25, 2012, which meant that China had successfully launched 16 BeiDou satellites in the past eight years. The BeiDou navigation satellite system, which was independently developed with complete independent intellectual property rights, is the world's fourth largest satellite navigation system following American GPS, Russian GLONASS (Global Orbital Navigation Satellite System) and European Galileo.

On November 17, 2010, the Tianhe-I was ranked as the world's fastest supercomputer, with a peak performance of 4.700 petaflops and a sustained speed of 2.566 petaflops.

"China-created" accelerates transformation and development

China's weaponry has been labeled with "China-created" in the past decade. According to the General Armaments Department (GAD) of the PLA, with the enhancement of China's capability of independent innovation, a large number of high-tech equipment has been commissioned to the PLA and the PLA's advanced weaponry and equipment with independent intellectual property rights has increased 15 times over that ten years ago.

China's first aircraft carrier "Liaoning ship" was delivered to the PLA Navy on the eve of the National Day which falls on October 1, 2012. Since then, the PLA Navy has stepped into an aircraft-carrier era. Yang Yujun, spokesman of the Ministry of National Defense (MND) of the People's Republic of China (PRC), said that all the main systems and equipment of the "Liaoning ship" were independently manufactured and refitted by China.

In the past ten years, the PLA has given priority to the development of IT-based weaponry and equipment which are geared to the needs of integrated joint operations in the future and accelerated the research and development of lethal weapons.

According to China' National Defense in 2010, the PLA Army has developed for its land operations an equipment system with helicopters, armored assault vehicles, and air defense and suppression weapons as the spine; the PLA Navy has built for its maritime operations a weaponry system with new types of submarines, surface vessels and surface attack aircraft as the spine; the PLA Air Force has formed for its air-control operations a weaponry system with new types of combat aircraft and ground-to-air missile weapon system as the spine; and the Second Artillery Force (SAF) of the PLA has set up a ground-to-ground combat equipment system with its medium and long-range missiles as the spine…

Military-civilian strategic cooperation constantly deepened

On the road of independent innovation of China's national defense industry, private capital is encouraged to enter the fields of science, technology and industry for national defense, and military-civilian integration in such fields as equipment development, equipment and technical support and equipment mobilization has been constantly deepened. The progress made by the national defense industry has not become a burden on national expenditure, but activated considerable equipment resources in the national economy, fully realizing the unification of building a prosperous country and a strong military.
