A piece of good news was sent from Buenos Aires of Argentina to the Dalian Naval Academy of the Navy of the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) on the morning of May 23, 2012.

It announced that the Dalian Naval Academy's marine surveying and mapping discipline has successfully passed the authoritative certification by the International Federation of Surveyors (IFS), the International Hydrography Organization (IHO) and the International Cartographic Association (ICA), and has once again won the Grade "A" training organization qualification for international hydrographers and international nautical chart cartographers.

The Marine Surveying and Mapping Department of the Dalian Naval Academy has been a comprehensive base of the marine surveying and mapping instruction and scientific research in China, and has provided military-oriented technical services for PLA troop units.

It has built key military disciplines and key military laboratories, and has trained 4,000-plus hydrographic and cartographic talents for the country and the military. All the curricular systems of the disciplines are set up in accordance with international standards.

In recent years, the Department has undertaken 60-plus tasks of scientific research projects, including those of the Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC), and the national and military special major subjects, among which 16 achievements of scientific research have won the National Scientific and Technological Progress Awards and the Military Scientific and Technological Progress Awards.

The "Navigation Support System" developed by the department has been massively equipped the PLA Navy's major combat ships and vessels.

The department's "Ship-use Nautical Chart Long-range Support System" has also played an important role in long-distance ship voyages.
