Central Military Commission Chairman Hu Jintao signed an order Thursday to issue rules on the participation of the People's Liberation Army (PLA) in United Nations peacekeeping missions.

The rules, which were issued on a trial basis, summarize the practices and experience of the PLA's participation in UN peacekeeping missions over the past 22 years and "systematically standardize" the army's peacekeeping efforts.

The rules, which will take effect on May 1, are "of great significance for strengthening the PLA's peacekeeping capabilities and creating a peaceful and responsible global image of China," according to a PLA statement.

The rules will cover responsibilities, training, management and punishments for rule infractions in regard to the PLA's participation in peacekeeping missions.
