Insights | Fields Medal winner:I'm sure there will be Chinese Fields Medalists
(ECNS) -- Fields Medal winner Efim Zelmanov said in an interview with China News Network on Tuesday in Beijing that he has been amazed by the support placed on mathematics and all sciences at all levels of governments during his three and a half years in China.
Professor Zelmanov, foreign member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and currently a Chair Professor at Southern University of Science and Technology, said that there is a tradition in Chinese society of valuing science and education, which can be traced back a thousand years.
He also said that he believes Chinese mathematicians will win the Fields Medal in the future, but that the overall mathematical development in China is much more important. From high schools and top universities to leading technology companies, mathematical talent is now playing a role across many sectors, he noted.
On how mathematics is shaping our lives, he said that everything from AI to withdrawing cash from an ATM relies on complex mathematical theories. He emphasized that the ongoing AI revolution also grew out of mathematics and will profoundly reshape the future job market, with many repetitive jobs likely to be replaced by AI. (By Zhang Jiahao)
