(ECNS)-- The South Shore Protection Station of Qinghai Lake National Nature Reserve contains 70 przewalski's gazelles. This species of gazelle is a first-class national-protected animal, and also the most endangered specie of the ungulate in the world.

Every year in November, it's their mating season, which will last about three months. During this critical period for the gazelle group, the rangers of the protection station will step up patrols to check and rescue those male gazelles that are injured during the fight for female and territories, and make sure the group are away from the disturbance by other animals. The rangers will also supply the gazelles with corn, oats and grass to ensure their nutrition, as well as enough fresh water.

According to the general survey, in 2007, the population of przewalski's gazelle was about 300. At present, the average annual population of it is stable at 2700. The lakeside area of Qinghai Lake is the only remaining habitat of them.
