Ningxia's eastern foothills of the Helan Mountains are recognized as one of the world's prime regions for premium wine production.
As of 2025, the region had 606,000 mu (40,400 hectares) of wine grape vineyards, about 40% of China's total, making it the country's largest contiguous wine grape-growing area. Ningxia produces 140 million bottles annually, accounting for nearly half of China's domestic winery wine output, the highest nationwide.
