Apple Inc said it has donated 25 million yuan ($3.825 million) to a new children's development fund in China, in the hope of helping kids in rural areas access better educational opportunities and digital technologies.

The move came as the US tech giant is working to narrow the education gap between urban and rural areas through targeted and influential initiatives and use technology to better empower children in poor regions.

The donation is used to help launch China Children's Development Fund, which was co-established by the China Development Research Foundation, or CDRF, and 10 Chinese and foreign companies including Apple.

Tim Cook, CEO of Apple, said in a post on the Sina Weibo social media platform that "The greatest gift we can give young people is to empower them with an education. We're proud to build on our long-standing partnership with CDRF to help launch the China Children's Development Fund — finding innovative ways to make education accessible to all."
