Global COVID-19 cases top 3.19 million: Johns Hopkins University

(ECNS) -- The number of confirmed novel coronavirus cases across the world has surpassed 3.19 million as of Wednesday, with fatalities exceeding 227,000, according to the latest tally by Johns Hopkins University.

The confirmed cases in the United States reached 1,037,000, and the coronavirus has claimed more than 60,000 lives in the country. 

U.S. President Donald Trump said on Wednesday the White House current coronavirus guidelines will be "fading out" as more states begin to reopen their economies despite coronavirus concern.  

In Britain, a total of 26,097 patients have died in hospitals, care homes and the wider community after testing positive for coronavirus, Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab said Wednesday.

In South Korea, the total COVID-19 cases reached 10,765 in the country while the death toll rose by one to 247.

On the Chinese mainland, four new confirmed cases (all imported) and 33 new asymptomatic patients were reported on Wednesday, according to China's National Health Commission. 

By April 29, the total number of confirmed cases on the Chinese mainland stands at 82,862, the cumulative death toll at 4,633, and the remaining infections at 619. In addition, 998 asymptomatic patients are under medical observation. 

Another 1,037 cumulative cases in Hong Kong, 45 in Macao and 429 in Taiwan have been reported.
