Beijing to further promote trash sorting

(ECNS) - Authorities in Beijing plan to impose a new measure to improve trash sorting that would mean waste not properly dealt with will not be collected.

Beijing News reported the measure is designed to put pressure on residential communities, business organizations and public institutes to help implement the sorting of discarded materials.

Sun Lyu, deputy director of Beijing Waste Classification and Management Promotion Center, said in addition to enterprises and public institutions, 8,511 residential communities have piloted trash sorting programs in the capital.

The city will also establish new guidelines on transportation of garbage and set standards for trash transport vehicles of various categories. 

Data shows Beijing processed 170,200 tons of kitchen waste in 2018, some 58.2 percent more than the year previous.
