Hotels in Shanghai will be requested to promote green consumption by not offering disposable toiletry kits unless customers ask, starting from July 1.

The municipal administration of culture and tourism is encouraging hotel guests to use and reuse recyclable daily consumables during their stay, which include toothbrushes, combs, bath sponges, razors, and nail files.

Reminders for green consumption will be placed in hotel rooms to help encourage customers to use fewer disposable toiletries, according to an implementation guideline recently issued by the administration.

"Shanghai is taking a lead in the country to take a measure like this," said Gerd Knaust, general manager of the Kunlun Jing An hotel, noting that hotels, as a window of the city, should make contributions to sorting and recycling garbage.

The city will enact a set of regulations on household garbage sorting and recycling from July 1.
