Shenzhou-21 crew advances key space experiments in orbit
The Shenzhou-21 crew members Zhang Lu, Wu Fei and Zhang Hongzhang carried out a full schedule of in-orbit duties last week, including space science experiments, the first full-system pressure emergency drill, and routine equipment inspections and maintenance.
The astronauts conducted a microgravity intuitive-physics experiment using onboard laptops, collecting behavioral data to examine how extended spaceflight affects instinctive physical representations and recovery mechanisms. They also used the Raman spectrometer to analyze metabolic components in urine samples, information that will help refine metabolite biomarker indicator systems and assessment criteria. In addition, the crew completed the installation of new software supporting space-medicine experiments.
In the field of microgravity physical sciences, the crew replaced the high-speed image storage unit in the two-phase systems experiment cabinet and completed the disassembly and reassembly tasks of experimental module.
The crew's first full-system pressure emergency drill simulated a scenario involving internal depressurization of the space station and guided the astronauts through the complete emergency-response workflow, strengthening both in-orbit handling capabilities and coordination with ground control.
Routine inspections and maintenance also proceeded as planned. The crew checked low-temperature storage units and the -80 degrees Celsius space freezer, examined pressure levels in environmental-control gas cylinders and conducted maintenance on the regenerative life-support system equipment.
Station-management work continued in parallel. The astronauts organized onboard supplies and carried out cabin cleaning to maintain a safe, orderly and hygienic living environment.
The crew also completed several medical assessments, including a non-invasive cardiac function test, providing ground researchers with up-to-date physiological data to monitor the health of all three astronauts during their mission.
