(ECNS) — The awarding ceremony for a major hydrogen storage initiative — the salt cavern hydrogen storage demonstration project and the million-cubic-meter hydrogen storage demonstration project — was held at Ye County, central China's Henan Province on Monday.

According to a representative from China Pingmei Shenma group, construction of the demonstration project, located in the company's high-quality salt field, began in November 2024. It marks the commencement of Asia's first large-scale deep underground salt cavern project for hydrogen storage, with a planned capacity of 1.5 million cubic meters.

The project has completed geological assessments, process design, and drilling operations. Cavity creation and operational testing are underway.

Salt caverns are a highly promising solution for hydrogen storage due to their excellent sealing properties, large storage capacity, low cost, and high safety.

China Pingmei Shenma group owns 6.62 square kilometers of salt field resources, with 13 sets of brine wells already in operation. The total salt extraction has exceeded 20 million tonnes, and the fields can provide over one million cubic meters of physical storage volume annually.
