Smartphone makers rush to unveil models ahead of holiday

Chinese smartphone vendors are rushing to unveil their latest high-end products ahead of the upcoming National Day holiday, when consumers tend to spend big to upgrade their electronics.

Oppo, for instance, unveiled its latest smartphone model the K9 Pro, which is powered by the chip company MediaTek's most powerful chipsets to date, the Dimensity 1200.

To complement the powerful chip, the K9 Pro features a 6.43-inch screen and a special game mode for esports enthusiasts. The phone is also equipped with a 4,500 mAh battery which can be charged by 50 percent with its 60 watt fast-charging technology.

Oppo said the K9 Pro comes with three lenses on its back: a 64-megapixel sensor, an 8-megapixel ultrawide on top of it, and a macro lens below. There's a 16-megapixel lens for selfies at the top left of the screen.

Oppo was the world's fourth largest smartphone vendor in the second quarter of this year, shipping 32.8 million units of smartphones in the timeframe, according to market research company International Data Corp.

Shipments of 5G phones in China surged 79.7 percent year-on-year to 168 million units in the first eight months of this year, data from the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology showed.
