After many delays, Christopher Nolan's long-awaited sci-fi movie "Tenet" will hit Chinese cinemas on September 4.

Release dates of the hotly-anticipated film have changed repeatedly because of the coronavirus pandemic and shuttered theaters across the world. Now, Warner Bros. Pictures is giving up simultaneous global releases and instead showing the film first in regions where the outbreak is less severe.

The film will debut in 70 countries and regions including Britain, Japan, Germany, France, Italy, Australia, and Russia between August 26 to the end of the month successively. Then, it will be released in some cities in North America on September 3.

Audiences on the Chinese mainland will have to wait until September 4, but Nolan had a special message for them in the trailer for the upcoming premiere in the country, released on Friday.

"I like nothing more than escaping to another world through the power of movies. And 'Tenet' is our attempt to make as big a film as possible with as immersive action as possible for the big screen. We are extremely excited about showing it to Chinese audiences," said Nolan.

Most of Nolan's films are rated above 8 on Chinese film data platforms Douban and Maoyan, with "Inception," "Interstellar" and "Batman: The Dark Knight" all scoring above 9.2.

The re-screenings on the Chinese mainland of Nolan's "Interstellar" and "Inception" on August 2 and August 28 respectively mean moviegoers will get the chance to catch "Nolan's trilogy" in cinemas in September after "Tenet" comes out. It's good news for moviegoers who haven't been to theaters for nearly six months and operators looking to narrow their losses after protracted closures and shy foot-traffic since reopening late last month.

"Tenet," a thriller about an agency trying to ward off World War III, combines big-budget high-octane scenes with inventive storytelling. The upcoming film stars John David Washington, Robert Pattinson, Elizabeth Debicki, Dimple Kapadia, Michael Caine, and Kenneth Branagh.
