‘Zootopia 2' box office tops 2 billion yuan in China, sets new record for imported animated films

(ECNS) -- Disney's "Zootopia 2" has surpassed 2 billion yuan (approximately $280 million) at the Chinese mainland box office, becoming the highest-grossing imported animated film in the country's history and breaking several other records.

Since its simultaneous release with North America, the film's earnings in the Chinese mainland have far outpaced its North American performance, making China its largest box office market worldwide.

"Zootopia 2" has been released in 57 countries and regions since Nov. 26. Data from online platforms showed that as of 5 p.m. on Dec. 1, its global box office had reached $818 million, with the Chinese mainland contributing $278 million, or 33.9 percent of the worldwide total.

The film's theater screening share has also been continuously rising, with the rate reaching 83.3% as of Nov. 30.

Zhang Jinfeng, deputy editor-in-chief of China Film News, noted that this achievement underscores the vast market base, substantial consumer demand, and immense consumption potential of China's film industry. It also reflects China's open and inclusive approach toward globally advanced cinematic accomplishments, highlighting that the Chinese film market serves as a crucial engine for the growth of the global film industry.

Meanwhile, related merchandise has also gained immense popularity. According to Walt Disney Company, since December 2023, the IP "Zootopia" licensing business in Greater China has tripled in growth. It is projected that by the end of 2025, over 2,000 licensed products would be launched in the region.

Alongside official limited-edition Disney merchandise, collaborations with more than 70 well-known brands have already produced a wide range of co-branded consumer products.
