His family expressed gratitude for the visits and support of friends in recent days and funeral arrangements will be announced later.
Born on November 4, 1948, in Hong Kong, Hui hailed from a distinguished family with roots in Shantou, Guangdong Province. His great-great-grandfather Xu Yingkui was an adopted son of Empress Dowager Cixi of the Qing dynasty (1644-1911) and served as Governor of Fujian and Zhejiang Province. His granduncle Xu Chongzhi was one of the founders of the Huangpu (Whampoa) Military Academy, and his grandaunt Xu Guangping was the wife of Lu Xun, a celebrated Chinese writer.
In a 2016 interview, Hui humbly reflected on his family background, saying that his family was very large, with over a dozen branches. A prestigious lineage did not determine his life, and he still had to work hard for himself.
Hui was known for his humility and warmth. In one of his video messages, he shared a heartfelt belief: "Cherish the people who are good to you right now."
