(ECNS) -- The body of a Chinese white dolphin, a nationally first-class protected wild animal and endangered species, was found Sunday on a beach in Tanbei Bayon Naozhou Island in Zhanjiang, Guangdong Province, according to media reports.
A preliminary police investigation revealed that the dolphin died in the sea due to a difficult birth before being washed ashore by waves. The calf did not survive.
Video footage showed that the snout of the baby dolphin was stuck in the genital slit of the adult dolphin.
All remains have been handed over to the animal protection department.
