(ECNS) -- Li Deping, a distinguished Chinese scientist and pioneer in the field of radiation protection, passed away due to illness at 17:52 on Sunday in Beijing at the age of 99, according to China Institute for Radiation Protection.

Li, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), was one of the founding figures in China's radiation protection sector. He received the Medal of Merit for China's Nuclear Industry in 2020  and the National Science Conference Award in 1978  for his groundbreaking contributions.

Li served as the former president and honorary president of the China Institute for Radiation Protection. Born in 1926, he had devoted his whole life to the radiation detector research.
