(ECNS) -- The BRICS Joint Committee on Space Cooperation was officially established on Wednesday, kicking off a new chapter on the five countries’ cooperation in the remote sensing satellite observation and data sharing fields, the China National Space Administration (CNSA) announced.

The establishment of the commission will guide the cooperation on BRICS Remote Sensing Satellite Constellation to better serve the socioeconomic development of the BRICS countries, Zhang Kejian, head of the CNSA, said at the committee's first video meeting.

Zhang said the commission will help BRICS countries to work closer on environmental protection, disaster prevention and mitigation, and tackling climate change with efficient data sharing and utilization.

The CNSA launched an initiative on cooperation on BRICS Remote Sensing Satellite Constellation in 2015. In August 2021, the five space agencies signed an agreement on the Cooperation on BRICS Remote Sensing Satellite Constellation.

The constellation is made up of six existing satellites: China-developed Gaofen-6 and Ziyuan III 02, CBERS-4, jointly developed by Brazil- China, Russia-developed Kanopus-V type, and India-developed Resourcesat-2 and 2A.

The CNSA established a satellite data center in Wenchang, South China’s Hainan province on April 24, to improve international space collaboration. The satellite data center acts as “a significant hub for international interchange and collaboration in the domain of satellite data and its use,” according to Wenchang authorities.
