Global COVID-19 cases hit 3.93 million: Johns Hopkins University

(ECNS) -- The number of confirmed novel coronavirus cases across the world has reached more than 3.93 million as of Friday, and the virus has claimed nearly 276,000 lives, according to the latest tally by Johns Hopkins University.

Confirmed cases in the United States have exceeded 1,283,000 and the death toll from the disease was more than 77,000.

U.S. Vice President Mike Pence's spokesperson, Katie Miller, tested positive for the coronavirus. Trump told reporters that he would be tested for the coronavirus daily.

In Britain, the total coronavirus-related death toll hit 31,000, according to the Environment Secretary George Eustice.

The Civil Protection Department of Italy said on Friday that the total number of coronavirus cases in the country, including the deceased, the recovered and those who are currently infected, rose by 1,327 to 217,185, and the coronavirus death toll has risen above 30,000.

The Chinese mainland reported one new imported case of the virus and no domestic transmission on Friday, the National Health Commission said.

The total number of confirmed cases on the Chinese mainland stood at 82,887 as of Friday, with the cumulative death toll at 4,633. In addition, 836 asymptomatic patients are under medical observation.

A total of 1,529 confirmed cases have been registered in Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan. Among them, there are 1,044 cumulative cases in Hong Kong, 45 in Macao and 440 in Taiwan.
