(ECNS) - An awe-inspiring airport in rugged Wushan County of Southwest China’s Chongqing Municipality will open in mid August after passing inspection on Wednesday.

The mountaintop airport is located at an elevation of 1,771 meters and is known as the “airport in the clouds.” The highest civil aviation airport in Chongqing will offer passengers a splendid view of Qutang Gorge, carved by the Yangtze River, to the south, as well as Wuxia Gorge and Shennv Peak to the east.

The airport will operate routes to destinations including Yantai City in east China’s Shandong Province. It is designed to handle up to 280,000 passengers, 1,200 tons of cargo and more than 3,300 aircraft a year.

Construction of the airport’s 3,500-square-meter terminal and 2,600-meter-long runways started in October 2015 and required a total investment of 1.64 billion yuan ($240 million).
