(ECNS) - China Mobile plans to launch its first 5G-based smart expressway program in Central China's Hubei province. It is the first such program in China.

The telecom's Hubei subsidiary said efforts were being made to select sites for 5G stations, test the intelligent tolling system, and prepare for testing of driverless cars.

The subsidiary reached an agreement with China Mobile's wholly owned technology subsidiary in Shanghai and Hubei Provincial Communications Investment to launch a library to explore how ultrafast 5G mobile broadband and the Internet of Things can reshape the transportation sector.

The joint program will conduct tests using intelligent and connected vehicles on the expressway, experiment with solutions for intelligent administration of expressways, and design and research relevant transportation products in the 5G era.

It’s expected that the use of Big Data, the Internet of Things and artificial intelligence will enable a comprehensive, real-time and accurate understanding of the expressway, including the vehicles and traffic on each section of road.

China Mobile's Hubei branch is building 31 base stations for the project, and plans to invest another one billion yuan this year to complete the construction of 2,000 5G stations.
