China announces 133 new academicians

(ECNS) -- The Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE) unveiled the list of 133 new academicians elected in 2023 on Wednesday, including 59 elected by the former and 74 by the latter.

The 59 newly-elected CAS academicians belong to six divisions, including 10 in Mathematics and Physics, 10 in Chemistry, 11 in Life Sciences and Medicine, 8 in Earth Sciences, 8 in Information Technology Sciences, and 12 in Technological Sciences.

Their average age is 54.7 years old, with a minimum age of 45 and a maximum of 65. Ninety percent are 60 years old or younger.

Five female scientists were elected. The discipline distribution and age structure of the academician group are further optimized. After this co-election, China has a total of 873 CAS academicians.

The 74 newly-elected CAE academicians belong to eight divisions, including 10 in Mechanical and Vehicle Engineering, 10 in Information and Electronics Engineering, 9 in Chemical, Metallurgical and Materials Engineering, 8 in Energy and Mining Engineering, 8 in Civil, Hydraulic and Architecture Engineering, 8 in Environment & Light and Textile Industries Engineering, 10 in Agriculture, and 11 in Medicine and Health Engineering.

They involve a total of 43 first-level disciplines, covering 78.2 percent of those in the academician co-election guides.

Their average age is 58.2 years, with a minimum age of 48 and a maximum of 76, and 81.1 percent of them are 60 years old or younger.

After this co-election, there are now 978 CAE academicians.

The CAS is the linchpin of China’s drive to explore and harness high technology and the natural sciences for the benefit of China and the world, and the CAE is the highest honorary and advisory academic institution in the nation’s fields of engineering sciences and technology, dedicated to uniting outstanding talents in engineering to lead innovation and development.

The two academies elect additional academicians every two years in parallel.
