Global COVID-19 cases top 3.11 million: Johns Hopkins University

(ECNS) -- The number of confirmed novel coronavirus cases across the world has surpassed 3.11 million as of Tuesday, with fatalities exceeding 216,000, according to the latest tally by Johns Hopkins University.

The confirmed cases in the United States reached 1,012,000, and the coronavirus has claimed more than 58,000 lives in the country.

In Canada, the Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said that the country's COVID-19 spread is slowing down due to effective health measures.

"The measures we have taken so far are working. In fact, in many parts of the country, the curve has flattened. But we are not out of the woods yet," Trudeau said at a press conference in Ottawa on Tuesday.

The coronavirus pandemic has claimed 27,359 lives in locked-down Italy, bringing the total number of infections, fatalities and recoveries to 201,505 as of Tuesday, according to the latest data released by the country's Civil Protection Department.

On the Chinese mainland, 22 new cases (21 imported) were reported on Tuesday, and the only domestic case is from Guangdong Province, according to the National Health Commission.

By April 28, there have been 82,858 cumulative infections, 77,578 recoveries, 4,633 deaths and 647 remaining infections on the Chinese mainland. Another 1,037 cumulative cases in Hong Kong, 45 in Macao and 429 in Taiwan have been reported.

World Health Organization Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus has expressed concern over the rising COVID-19 figures from Africa, Eastern Europe, Latin America, and parts of Asia, warning that the pandemic is "far from over."
