U.S. stocks ended lower on Tuesday as Wall Street weighed the geopolitical risks following a U.S. airstrike against a top Iranian commander last week.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 119.70 points, or 0.42 percent, to 28,583.68. The S&P 500 decreased 9.10 points, or 0.28 percent, to 3,237.18. The Nasdaq Composite Index was down 2.88 points, or 0.03 percent, to 9,068.58.

All the 11 primary S&P 500 sectors turned negative at the close, with real estate and consumer staples down 1.19 percent and 0.73 percent, respectively, leading the decliners.

On the data front, U.S. factory orders slid 0.7 percent in November to mark the third decline in four months, the Commerce Department reported Tuesday.

U.S. non-manufacturing index rose to 55 percent in December from the November reading of 53.9 percent, according to the Institute for Supply Management on Tuesday. Numbers over 50 percent are viewed as positive for the economy.

On Friday, a U.S. drone struck a convoy at Baghdad International Airport, killing Qassem Soleimani, commander of the Quds Force of Iran's Islamic Revolution Guards Corps. The killing has sparked outrage and revenge threats from Tehran.
