London was the most expensive place to bring up a child, with the total cost in excess of quarter of a million pounds - £253,638. It was £214,559 in the cheapest region, Yorkshire and the Humber.

Children now take up a third of the average household's net income, and six out of ten parents surveyed by LV= said they were struggling to manage their outgoings.

Myles Rix, of LV=, said: 'The cost of raising a child is at an all-time high and, with the price-tag of childcare continuing to rise, family incomes are being stretched even further.'
