The ancient city of Gaochang covering an area of two million square meters is located at the foot of Flaming Mountain, about 40 kilometers southeast of Turpan, Xinjiang. It was a key point along the Silk Road, also the political and cultural center in China's northwest from the Han until the Ming dynasty. The city was divided into three parts and most of its walls are still well preserved. It is of great value to the study of the politics, economy and culture of Turpan in the Han and Tang eras.
