Cello recitals of Beethoven works will be staged at Shanghai Concert Hall by Qin Liwei on October 30 and 31.

The recitals have been named "Beethoven Cycle" and will feature five sonatas and three variations.

Cello Sonata No. 1 in F major, Cello Sonata No. 4 in C major and Cello Sonata No. 3 in A major will be played in the first concert to reveal how Beethoven's music changed over the years. Cello Sonata No. 2 in G minor and Cello Sonata No. 5 in D major will be played in the second recital to showcase the clash between classicism and romanticism in Beethoven's works.

"I had thought about playing all five sonatas in one recital, but I don't think it will be a pleasant journey for the audience as it would be like five marathons within two hours," Qin says.

Qin believes dividing the sonatas into two recitals will help spectators appreciate the details in the music, while adding some colorful variations can help them relax and get refreshed between the sonatas.

Awarded the silver prize at the 11th International Tchaikovsky Competition, Qin has gradually gained global recognition for his outstanding skills and interpretations. He recorded an album of Beethoven Sonatas for DECCA in 2010.

"I personally like Beethoven and his works very much," Qin says. "You may find Haydn's work pleasant, but you will find Beethoven's work more attractive. He is like a pioneering rocker at his time, interpreting emotions like rage and sadness while most of the other composers chased after the beauty of calm and steadiness."
