Swiss artist Roman Signer's first touring exhibition to China kicked off at the Art Museum of China, Central Academy of Fine Arts on Thursday.

The exhibition features more than 100 screens boasting more than 200 videos and films shot by Signer from 1975 to 1989, an all-round demonstration of the artist's works through the years.

Famous for his exploration of the world of physics, Signer has dedicated himself to documenting the effects of time, physical movement and material transformation under pressure since the 1970s.

Through the use of gun power, sand, water and time, and things that could not be more common in life, like chairs, buckets and umbrellas, Singer recorded scenes that other people would take for granted using a Super8 (8mm film) camera.

Videos show a heavy box moved away by the force of a waterfall, several inflated balloons causing a chair to float, a pipe moving forward on a zigzag path as it is filled with water. These fun experiments from common daily life are both relaxing and intriguing, leaving viewers waiting to see what happens next.

Born in 1938 in Appenzell, Switzerland, Signer began creating art in 1972. His publications and videos were introduced to Chinese art institutes in the 1980s, where they were widely accepted. Among the works exhibited is a photo he took when he traveled to China in 1981.

The exhibition is scheduled to run until November 23.
