Social progress has seen green, low-carbon and environmental concepts become a common part of Chinese cities, and these concepts have gradually altered urban residents' attitudes towards life and consumption.

A special make-up exhibition called "Enlighten Our Green Senses" is being staged at Wheelock Square to present different stylish green lifestyles.

The exhibition, co-hosted by Green Monday, a social enterprise that advocates a meatless diet once a week, features 15 celebrities' ad campaigns emphasizing various colors and styles of make-up.

The many celebrities participating in the event used their artistic creations to draw attention to issues affecting the planet. By creating a new style for each of the celebrities based on their look and what type of performer they are, Hong Kong make-up artist Annie G. aimed to reinterpret and bring greater depth to what it means to protect the environment.

Among the make-up artworks, the subject of "Earth's Destiny" by Hong Kong actress Annie Liu is the over-exploitation of resources, today's ecological imbalance, and the emergence of extreme weather phenomena such as acid rain and super typhoons.

Hong Kong model Cherry Ngan's "The Eco-Karma," meanwhile, is about the blind pursuit of economic growth and the toll that industrial pollution has taken on soil, rivers and oceans.

The exhibition also attracted former Olympic gymnastics champion Liu Xuan. She expresses her determination in alerting people about the threat of global warming in the artwork.

Liu says that all people has a little "green" in their hearts, and she also revealed that 90 percent of the crew of this exhibition have decided to give up meat on Mondays, and she is one of them.

According to Regina Leung, deputy general manager of Wheelock Square, Green Monday is only the first step toward a low-carbon lifestyle. They will put more green concepts into practice to encourage more people in the city to adopt green lifestyles.

"White-collar professionals have hectic work schedules and face a lot of pressure every day," Leung says. "At a time when environmental and health problems are becoming increasingly acute, a healthy and sustainable lifestyle is even more important."
