Czech Philharmonic to play Dvorak

Czech conductor Jili Belohlavek will return to the Shanghai Oriental Art Center with the Czech Philharmonic and present Dvorak's Symphony No.6.

Belohlavek and the orchestra have visited Shanghai before, but not together.

Belohlavek was appointed chief conductor of the Czech Philharmonic in 1990. From 2006 to 2012 he was chief conductor of the BBC Symphony Orchestra, and returned to Czech Philharmonic in 2012. He also founded the Prague Philharmonia in 1994.

For over a century, Czech Philharmonic has represented the pinnacle of Czech cultural achievement.

In 1896 Dvorak himself conducted the orchestra's debut performance at the Rudolfinum, still home to the orchestra's Prague concerts.

In 1908 Gustav Mahler conducted the orchestra for the world premiere of his Symphony No. 7.

English pianist Paul Lewis will join the orchestra and perform Piano Concerto No.1 by Brahms.

Lewis performs regularly as soloist with the world's great orchestras, including the BBC Symphony, London Symphony and Royal Concertgebouw, in collaboration with such conductors as Sir Colin Davis, Bernard Haitink and Daniel Harding.
