French-Chinese artist Yan Peiming's solo exhibition Dead and Alive will be unveiled on May 18 at the Beijing Center for the Arts in Beijing.

The exhibition starts from the "dead" objects. It discusses the power of "death", and also focuses on the meaning of "life", said the preface to the exhibition. This is BCA's inaugural show after moving into its new space near Nanluogu Xiang from Qianmen 23.

The works to be displayed include the artist's iconic epic-size paintings of portraits and landscapes as well as his new works concerning social development. The selection features Yan's works over the past five years.

Born in Shanghai in 1960 and living in Dijon, France, since the early 1980s, Yan was one of the earliest Chinese artists to have settled abroad and developed an international career. In 2009, his Les Funrailles de Monna Lisa (The Funerals of Monna Lisa) exhibition was held at the Muse du Louvre, making him one of the only two artists to run exhibitions at the Muse du Louvre, besides Pablo Ruiz Picasso.
