An exhibition of fan faces of Ming and Qing dynasties

Many calligraphers and painters of the Ming and Qing Dynasties excellent in fan face decoration have left behind a wealth of amazing works.

This exhibition features 90 calligraphy and painting works mainly carried in folding fans selected from the collection of the National Museum of China.

In the four categories of Landscape Painting, Flower & Bird Painting, Figure Painting and Calligraphy, the exhibits comprise works by professional calligraphers and painters like Wen Zhengming, Dong Qichang, Chen Hongshou and Bian Shoumin and those by officials and scholars represented by Wang Siren, Wu Weiye, Sun Yirang and Lin Zexu, manifesting the artistic attainments of the then celebrities of different social status as well as their love for the natural landscape and feel about the human world.

In addition, the exhibition has prepared displays respectively on An Overview of Fan History and An Illustration on the Evolution of Fan Form in Ancient China as well as videos on The Making Process of Fans and Selected Fan Faces of Ming and Qing Dynasties, affording professionals and fans of calligraphy and painting more background knowledge and more ways to admire the art.
