Rules of Thumb

How to go:

There are three ways to depart by coach bus for Yuanyang from Yunnan's capital Kunming. The best option is to go to Gejiu and then transfer there to Yuanyang; the whole trip takes about five hours. The second option is to bus to Jianshui, where a transfer is also needed to take you the rest of the way; the road is very bumpy and may cost you another hour, bringing the total number of hours on the road to six. The last choice is a direct bus, but they move very slowly and the duration of travel varies. Three of these buses run daily, with one during the day and two at nighttime. Each of the bus trips cost under 100 yuan($16.3).

What to wear:

The weather is just right there, neither cold or hot during the whole year. But the sun can really burn at noon, so sun cream is advised for those who do not take well to tanning. A light jacket may also be useful for travelers who rise early and stay out late.

What to eat:

Local people mainly eat rice and rice noodles. But there are plenty of options in town, from local rice-based dishes to ethnic dishes from around the country. The local fish, raised in rice paddy fields, however, is a must-try.

Where to stay:

Lodging services are mainly spread out within the township. Sometime referred to as a paradise for backpackers, the area offers low prices and numerous accommodation options, from home-stays to starred hotels. The new township area, within close proximity to scenic areas, is highly recommended for backpackers.

Getting around:

It is best to hire a vehicle to make getting around town and touring off to select corners easier. Prices typically range from 120 yuan to 200 yuan per day in the old town. Many people live in villages on the hills, but there are no roads to bring you there. Be prepared for a fair walk through them if you want to have a look.
