Kai Bar

2013-02-22 14:23        Web Editor: yaolan comment

The original Kai Bar – best known for its 10RMB drinks and the thronging summer crowds – changed the face of Beijing's bar scene, back when Sanlitun Nan Lu ruled the roost and the main attractions around Sanlitun Bei Lu's back alley were Poachers bar and toothless DVD salesmen (the latter being the more attractive draw).

With the destruction of Sanlitun Nan Lu, Kai Bar quickly went from brave new venture to torpid symbol of Beijing's insalubrity. The customer base seemed to get ever more questionable, the public urination more copious, and this once grand venture had soon materialised into a byword for sleaze.

Now that Kai Bar's original venue has succumbed to the wrecking ball as well, the staff have thrown open the doors to its replacement home on the third floor of Tongli Studios. This new version offers everything the original did. No, really: absolutely everything. The decor is the same, from the sofas down to the peculiar painting of a frog jumping out of a naked guy's arsehole (seriously, it was there for years, you should have noticed by now). The stripper pole is still there in all its pervy glory, the dancefloor is still roughly the same size, and the drinks are all still only 10RMB – making it the cheapest bar in the area by a long way.

While most places that come back to life in a new location fail miserably (White Rabbit, China Doll et al), Kai's rebir th looks set to be a hit, due to a sensible decision to keep everything the same. The Kai Bar formula for success has been emulated per fectly; the only massively noticeable tweak is the lack of a piping-hot piss lake outside the entrance, but give the punters time and even this feature will likely be replicated.
