Traveling to Changbai Mountain is like a blind date, you never know what to expect.

The 2,749 meter mountain is the highest in North China and includes the dormant volcano of Tianchi Lake, a holy place for people with Korean and Manchu roots.

While in summer it is known for its virgin forests, in the winter its natural scenery and ski runs draw the crowds.

Wang Jianlin of the Wanda Company has led development of the resort, providing the ski runs and a range of luxury accommodations. Convenient flights enable visitors to fly in on weekend breaks.

Star watching in the beautifully clear night skies and visiting local villages that have huts and even chimneys made of pine are among the other attractions of a visit.

And, of course, you can also enjoy five-star entertainment at Holiday Inn, Sheraton and Westin, where designers have integrated local forestry culture into the construction of the hotels.
