(ECNS) -- A patient assaulted a doctor at the First Affiliated Hospital of Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine on Monday, leaving the physician seriously injured, authorities said.
Doctor Wang Haibin was attacked by a former knee surgery patient who had undergone knee surgery years ago and visited the hospital a week earlier.
According to insiders, the assailant entered the consultation room armed with a knife, locked the door, and attacked Dr. Wang, causing critical injuries to multiple organs.
Despite emergency surgery, Wang remains in the ICU with concerns about his long-term recovery due to the severity of his wounds.
According to China Newsweek, Wang was seeing patients on Monday morning with a student, who sustained minor injuries.
The assailant has been arrested, with an investigation ongoing.
Public records show that Wang, born in Shandong Province in April 1971, has over 30 years of medical experience and has performed more than 1,500 joint replacement surgeries. He specializes in treating conditions such as osteonecrosis of the femoral head and hip dysplasia.
