(ECNS) -- Kunming Customs announced on Monday that a China-Laos Railway international freight train carrying 1,616 metric tons of manganese ore from Laos had entered China, marking the first import of such ore through the Mohan railway port in Yunnan Province.
Since its launch, the China-Laos railway has steadily increased freight volumes, thanks to its large capacity, high safety, and strong reliability. It has become a preferred route for bulk commodity imports.
As of March 31, 2025, the railway has handled over 12 million metric tons of import and export cargo worth more than 50 billion yuan (about $6.86 billion), transporting over 3,000 categories of goods, including mineral resources, agricultural products, food, and daily consumer goods.
To ensure the smooth import of this first batch of manganese ore, Mengla Customs under Kunming Customs coordinated with commerce and railway authorities to streamline processes such as customs declaration and cargo handling. Measures like "release before inspection" were adopted to further improve efficiency.
Zi Jianming, a representative of Xishuangbanna Ziyu Dameng Trading Co., Ltd., said that the entire process from declaration to customs clearance for this batch of manganese ore was very fast, saving them significant logistics costs.
