
(ECNS) -- Chinese animated film Ne Zha 2 secured the top position on the box office chart in the history of China film on Thursday with about 5.8 billion yuan ($796.32 million), box office tracker Beacon data showed.
It has overtaken the previous record holder The Battle at Lake Changjin whose box office earning was 5.775 billion yuan ($792.86 million).
Ne Zha 2 takes its name from a mythological character in the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) novel Fengshen Yanyi, or The Investiture of the Gods. Its hero Ne Zha is depicted as a demon-slaying hero in the Chinese classic Journey to the West.
The film, directed by Yang Yu, who nickname is Jiaozi, focuses on the hero’s struggles and growth. Its stunning visuals and engaging storyline have impressed audiences, making it rate above 95 percent of animations on Douban, a popular Chinese film review platform.
