(ECNS)--The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) turns 75 on April 4, 2024. As one of the longest-lived military alliances in modern history, perhaps it’s a good time for NATO to pause and ponder its perilous path, which has posed a grave threat to global peace and stability.

NATO, as both history and relevant theories on military alliance would dictate, was destined to disintegrate once the Cold War ended. Unfortunately, this has not been the case. Far from disbanding, the alliance has been bent on reckless expansion.

The NATO was the chief culprit of a series of brutal conflicts, putting people's lives at grave risk in different parts of the world. Thus, the military bloc has been widely criticized for interfering in the internal affairs of other countries and undermining regional peace and stability.

Arming and expanding more and more will not cure NATO's militarism. History has proven that the tide of peaceful development and win-win cooperation cannot be stopped. Going against the tide is destined to incur costs.
