(ECNS)-- Li Geyin, 30, has joined a traditionally male-only tricycle driving team that conducts tours in the heart of Beijing.
Li was born in the Chinese capital and went to Italy to learn printmaking after graduating from the Beijing Institute of Clothing. She set up a studio with friends after returning in 2013, focusing on illustration, printmaking, exhibition and art training.
Li has caused quite a stir by joining Houhai Baye (Houhai's eight male drivers), which originally consisted entirely of Beijing locals.
All members of the group were born in Houhai, and have a thorough understanding of the area's history. But now there are only three original drivers left, as some are aging or battling illness.
Li is the first female applicant since the Shichahai Hutong Tour was established 23 years ago, and also its most educated, said Li Yongfu, one of the members of Houhai Baye.
"I love Beijing Culture, and want to introduce and spread it while I work as a tricycle driver," Li Geyin said. "Meanwhile, I can show my printmaking work to tourists when I introduce them to Shichahai history. It's a good channel to spread Beijing culture."
